The settlement was founded in the VII century by the ancient Thracians. Then it was called Larissa, and only in the XIV century, it took the name of Saint Vlas - patron saint of merchants, breeder, and healer.
In the name of the saint, there was a monastery in the XIV-XVIII centuries, burned by countless raids by pirates. Saint Vlas is a revered saint by both the Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox Church.
4 more monasteries were located in the vicinity of the village. The town of Sveti Vlas is one of the oldest settlements in Nessebar municipality. All of them were destroyed in the 18th century, but individual remains can still be found.
In 2007 in Sveti Vlas was opened the largest marina in Bulgaria - Marina Dinevi, with a capacity of 300 yachts.
